I’m ready for spring! Unfortunately, here in Chicagoland, we are not yet free from the grips of winter. Behind the scenes of this picture is a mound of snow as high as my knee, covered in a sheet of ice, but let’s just focus on the grass sprouting from these little eggs, sound like a plan?
We’ve had these crates sitting around the playroom for awhile. They were from a Melissa and Doug food groups set (the girls just gotta have play food in their play kitchen, right?). There wasn’t a chance that I would throw these away, so they’ve just sat in the basement, waiting for the perfect project.
I stained them with a gray stain, and then dry brushed a layer of white chalk paint on top.
I took an empty egg crate, cut it in half, and spray painted each side. The half egg crate fit perfectly inside each crate. This “perfect fit” thing virtually never happens around here, but I take it and run with it when it does!
For the last week, I’ve been very careful with my egg cracking to save up the shells for this project. To just remove the top third of the shell, I used a spoon to lightly tap around the outside of the shell. This helps to create a clean-ish break.
I added some soil, and then this wheat grass I picked up from the store. If I had more patience, I would have grown my own grass seeds in the egg shells, but I was too excited to put this project in motion to wait.
I’ll probably take out the grass-filled eggs around Easter so we can display our own decorated Easter eggs in the crates. For now, it’s adding that little reminder that spring is around the corner!

So cute and festive! I love Easter decor! We still have snow on the ground but hopefully that will change soon and I can get in the spirit!
