I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but something about it gives me the urge to create and decorate.  This is the first year I’ve decorated my front “porch” for fall, and I decided to create this easy DIY fall wood sign to be part of the design.

I create it to look like a sign you might see at a fall farm or pumpkin patch. It highlights all the fun fall activities that are sort of a right of passage into the fall season. I struggle with free-handing neat letters, so I used an easy trick for transferring letters to trace which I’ll explain below.

All in all, this DIY fall front porch sign took less than an hour to make!

How to Make a Fall Sign for Your Porch

Cut the Wood to Form Arrow Points

Use a miter saw to cut one end at 45 degree angles to make the point of the arrow. You could also use a jigsaw or circular saw and just eyeball the arrow point as well.

You could also purchase unfinished wood arrows from a craft store to use for this fall porch sign as well.

Print and Transfer Letters to Wood

To write perfectly on my hand painted signs, I always use an easy trick for transferring printed images to trace with a paint pen.

First, print the fall phrases on standard paper. If you wood arrows are bigger or smaller, you may need to change the size of the printed image.

Then, use this chalk method of how to transfer graphics to copy the words onto the wood. After that, use a paint pen to paint the words onto the sign.

I also free-hand sketched a little image to go along with each phrase.

Attach the Wood Arrows to the Sign

Use the remaining 1×3 board to make the post for your sign. My post is thinner because I used a leftover 1×2 inch board that I had laying around instead.

To attach the wood arrows to the sign, first drill pilot holes through the post at the places where you want to attach the arrows.

Then, screw from the back of the board into the front to attach the wood arrows. Make sure you choose screws that will not penetrate all the way through the front of the arrow. (The writing is on the backside of the arrow in the photo because I messed up and redid it on the front!)

If you used thin, unfinished wood arrows, I would recommend using wood glue or pin nails to attach the arrows to the front of the post.

That’s it!  Super simple and super cheap.  In fact, I’d say this project cost me less than a buck because I already had all the supplies laying around.

I love the fall touch it gave to my front porch, even though the only activity you can really find in my backyard is one pumpkin plant and an apple tree.

A few years ago I added some mums in, a bale of hay, and some pumpkins from the garden (that the squirrels promptly ate within a week).

By planting my own pumpkins this year, I was able to save tons of money on fall decor. Here's how I decorated our front porch for the season on a budget.

Here are a few more easy fall crafts that reuse items you probably already have laying around the house!
