I love the rustic look of burlap, and I especially love how cheap it is! It keeps the cost of DIY projects low, which is always a plus in my book. I like simple burlap banners, but they are just that – simple. I experimented with using patterned fabric to add some visual interest to the burlap, and I loved how it turned out so much that I’ve made quite a few of them. I’m sure there will be more for the upcoming holidays!
To start, I always fold my fabric in half to cut out my triangles, giving me a symmetrical shape. After cutting the fabric, I cut the burlap triangles just a tad bit smaller.
I use stencils and black acrylic paint to add letters to the burlap pieces.
I pinned each burlap piece onto a piece of fabric that I folded over. I sewed one line across all three layers (burlap, top fabric, bottom fabric). I trimmed off the corner triangles on the bottom flap that stuck out.
Then, I simply used a large needle to thread jute twine through the slots.
I used this banner on my fall mantle this year.
I also created a different banner to hang in an open picture frame.
I think these would be adorable at a wedding, baby shower, or birthday party. You could make a small version for a cake topper or a highchair for baby’s first birthday.
