This was a spur of the moment upcycle. I actually didn’t have it on my list of projects when I started planning out this 31 days of upcycled holiday decor, but I was in the thrift store the other day and I found these wicker paper plate holders and I knew it was meant to be. They were begging to become a “wreath” (and possibly another project in a couple of days as well).
I painted them with a gray-black paint I had leftover from another project and let it dry.
After it was completely dry, I used some the letters I had cut out of cardstock as a template for the glitter.
I didn’t tape it down, but rather just held it in place as I put down the glue. The glue does seep under the cardstock, but as long as you continue to hold the template in place as you put on the glitter, it won’t matter at all, because glue dries clear!
This wicker material would have been really difficult to stencil with paint and get clean lines, because it’d be impossible to get the stencil to sit on all parts of the service, which would just beg for the paint to seep under it. Seepage is one of my least favorite things (and I have a whole post devoted to how to stop it), which is why I decided to use glitter from the get go.
I used hot glue to attach the pieces of ribbon, and my wreath was complete!
