Instead of recycling those pickle, apple sauce, and spaghetti jars, you can reuse glass jars as festive votive candle holders!
These jars are actually old canning jars I found at my parents house when I borrowed took their canning pot. Whatever type of jar you use, just be sure you have a side that is not raised up with lettering or images.
Start by cleaning your jars, removing any sticker residue, and then wiping them down with rubbing alcohol. I used glass enamel paint, because I like the semi-transparent look it gives, and once you bake them in the oven, the paint lasts forever, even when washed. Acrylic paint or chalk paint also works, it just doesn’t adhere to the glass as well, so it can be scratched easily, and it can’t ever be washed. For this project, this isn’t really a problem, so any paint will do.
I used my Sihoulette to cut out some different leaves. Ugh, I just became that blogger that casually mentions she used her Silhouette. I hated reading those words in posts, because I was Silhouette-less for a long time. Considering I remember that feeling from only a couple of months ago, let me tell you how I would have done this without my ever-so-convenient Silhouette machine. If you can find stickers in the shapes of leaves, they will work great. Or, you can also cut out your own leaves (I would print out a picture to use as a pattern, similar to what I did here when I stenciled my front porch) in sticker vinyl. Even though it’s sold in the Silhouette/Cricut area, you can easily use an Exacto knife to cut your own pattern as well.
After sticking the leaves to the jars, I mixed up orange and white in two shades, one slightly darker than the other and then also used the solid orange on the bottom and the solid white on the top.
It created a candy corn effect, which I hoped it would look like when I envisioned the project (I love it when that happens). Be sure to remove the stickers as soon as possible, because if the paint has time to dry, when you try to remove the sticker, it will peel off the paint with it.
I followed the directions on the bottle to bake the jars in order to cure the paint.
Candy corn jars filled with popcorn – it seemed to be the perfect match.
My daughter kept talking about the candles, and asking when we were going to light them. I totally forgot to do it with her before she went to bed, but when I went to take the pictures of them lit up, I found three birthday candles stuck in the corn. Apparently, someone thought I skimped on the candles. You can’t help but smile at that.
I’ll be creating and posting my repurposed and upcycled holiday decor items for the entire month of October. I hope you follow along and gain some inspiration to create your own DIY holiday items!
