Halloween Diffusers – Easy DIY Cauldron
It’s easy to create the look of a bubbling cauldron with an essential oil diffuser. This post includes tips on finding the best diffuser to fit into small cauldrons available at Michaels or Joann’s, plus the best Halloween diffuser blends to brew up in your easy DIY cauldron.
The biggest challenge I faced when making my diffuser cauldron a couple of years ago was finding a small cauldron that could sit on my counter, and then finding the right sized diffuser to actually fit inside. Otherwise, it’s seriously the easiest DIY project you can imagine!
I’ve done all the hard work for you this year and scoped out the best cauldrons and diffusers to pair together to make your Halloween cauldron diffuser. Plus, you’ll find my three favorite Halloween essential oil blends to mix up in your cauldron diffuser!

SUpplies to Make a DIY Cauldron
All of these supplies have been updated in August 2023, to match the current stock at craft stores!
- Small essential oil diffuser with colored light function (This diffuser fits into all of the cauldrons listed below – I tested them all!)
- Michaels:
- Ceramic paintable cauldron
- Black cauldron
- Black bat dish (not a cauldron, but I think it would still look cool!)
- Larger black cauldron (might be big enough to fit a diffuser you already have)
- Joann:
- Piece of gold tulle or mesh fabric
Don’t wait until October (or even September) to buy a cauldron for this project. When I tried to find my cauldron at the end of September in years’ past, I had to search a few towns away before I found one in stock. Craft stores bring out Halloween decor in August, and some items do sell out quickly.
If you already own a small diffuser, bring the top with you to the store so you can test it inside the cauldrons to make sure it fits.
How to Make a Halloween Diffuser
Obviously, this is an insanely easy DIY project once you find and buy all of your supplies.
If you purchased a white, unfinished ceramic cauldron, simply spray paint it black. Add additional colors for accents if you’d like.
Then, place the diffuser inside the cauldron and use tulle to lightly cover the top of the cauldron. Once you turn on the diffuser, you can move the fabric around a little bit to create more of a billowing smoke look (instead of the diffuser mist shooting straight up).
If you want to completely hide the cord, you’ll have to drill a hole in the back of the cauldron (or buy one that already has a hole in the bottom as some do!). Use a glass drill bit to drill a hole in the back (for cauldrons without legs) or the bottom (if the cauldron has legs) of the cauldron.
Now, wasn’t that easy?
