Easy Way to Use a Ryobi Battery in a Power Wheels Car

Replace the battery in a Power Wheels car with a Ryobi battery that can be easily changed and recharged AND make the car faster! This post gives the steps needed to replace a Power Wheels battery with a Ryboi battery.

This is a simple DIY project that’s cheaper than buying a new Power Wheels battery. I see Power Wheels cars at garage sales and even at the side of the road quite often. Of course, almost always it doesn’t run, often because it has an old battery that just won’t take much of a charge anymore. Or, I’ve heard from others how long it takes for the battery to charge, and how expensive the replacement batteries are to buy. This causes lots of waiting in between rides for the battery to charge.

This DIY project will solve all of those problems! Simply replace the Power Wheels battery with a Ryobi attachment, and then use those Ryobi batteries to power the car. Chances are you have more than one of those batteries laying around, which allows for endless power to your kids’ car!! Even if you have purchased a new Power Wheels car, you can still upgrade it with a Ryobi battery to make it run faster and allow for easier charging.

Supplies Needed to Use a Ryobi Battery in a Power Wheels

• Ryobi One 18V Power Cap
• Old Power Wheels battery
• Wire Cutting/Stripping Tool
• 12 Gauge Wire Connectors (twist connectors or butt connectors)

How to Switch the Battery in a Power Wheels Car

The key to this project is to purchase a Ryobi cap that can be attached to a plug that then can be plugged into the Power Wheels car. I love supporting small businesses, so I purchased mine from this Etsy seller and it has worked perfectly for over a year.

The seller has made some updates to the cap since I first purchased it over a year ago. Mine looks slightly different than the one you’ll see in the link above.

How to Disassemble an Old Power Wheels Battery

To be able to attach the power cap to the Power Wheels car, remove the plug that is attached to the original Power Wheels battery. Then, we can easily attach it to the new Ryobi cap.

To access this plug, first use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the top off the old battery. (See the video at the bottom of the post for more details on this step.)

Once the top is removed, pull the plug out. Then use wire cutters to cut the two wires that are attached to the battery.

How to Attach Ryobi Cap to Power Wheels Car

After the plug is removed from the old battery, you’ll connect those wires to the Ryobi cap with wire connectors. Now, this can be plugged into the car and serves as the new port for the Ryobi battery!
